Star Center Theatre is seeking actors for a powerful, Motown-infused drama set during the 1967 Detroit uprising.

CASTING THE FOLLOWING ROLES:
CHELLE (F, late 30’s to early 40’s) Black woman. Strong, steadfast, firm and not easily impressed. A widow, mother and sister. A loving heart beneath her pride.
LANK (Langston) (M, early to late 30’s) Black man. Cool, loving and charismatic. A dreamer. He has a special effect on women – but is not a womanizer. Chelle’s younger brother.
BUNNY (Bonita) (F, mid-20’s to 30’s) Black woman. Flirty, spunky, fun and joyful. A friend and sometimes a lover. Never lets anything get her down.
SLY (Sylvester) (M, late 20’s to mid-30’s) Black man. Hip, slick and sweet-talking. An honest hustler and numbers man. Fiercely loyal. Lank’s best buddy.
CAROLINE (F, late 20’s to early 30’s) White woman. Quiet strength, troubled, soft and mysterious. There is a world of danger behind her eyes.

ABOUT THE SHOW
MEMPHIS is an electrifying, soulful musical inspired by the underground dance clubs and radio revolution of the 1950s. Against the backdrop of segregation, a rebellious white DJ falls in love with a gifted Black singer—and together they challenge a city steeped in fear, racism, and change. Featuring explosive dance numbers and powerful gospel, R&B, and early rock ’n’ roll music.
This is a show about voice, courage, and the power of music to move us forward.
CAST SIZE: 16 PERFORMERS
We are casting a diverse and dynamic ensemble of singers, dancers, and actors.
PRINCIPAL ROLES: Huey Calhoun, Felicia Farrell, Delray Farrell, Bobby Dupree, Gator, Gladys Calhoun, Mr. Simmons
ENSEMBLE: 9 performers who will portray Club Singers, Church Choir, TV Dancers, Studio Personnel, Protesters, etc.
All ensemble roles include featured vocal and movement opportunities.
WHO WE’RE LOOKING FOR
We are seeking performers of all identities, body types, and backgrounds.
Strong singers with soul. Storytellers with heart. Movers with rhythm.
This musical centers Black musical traditions and we strongly encourage Black/African-American performers to audition.
AUDITION REQUIREMENTS
Please prepare:
-16–32 bars of a soul, gospel, R&B, or musical theatre song that shows vocal character and storytelling
-Bring sheet music
-Be prepared for a movement/dance call (comfortable clothing recommended)
-Cold readings may be requested
Optional: Bring a headshot/resume (not required to audition)
FEATURED VOCAL/DANCE ENSEMBLE NEEDS
We are especially seeking:
Soul/Gospel Vocalists (Church Soloist track)
High-energy Dance Ensemble (Club/TV dancer tracks)
Male Tenor for “Wailin’ Joe” featured blues solo
Teens 16 and up with strong vocal ability may be considered for select ensemble roles.
REHEARSAL SCHEDULE
Rehearsals will be scheduled evenings and weekends with a combination of:
Full cast rehearsals
Small group / featured scenes
Music-focused sessions and movement sessions
We honor school/work/life balance and will use a transparent, posted rehearsal schedule.

A Holiday Festival Ensemble
Date: December 6, 2025
Casting: 6–8 dynamic singers/actors (late teens to adults)
Description: Ensemble will perform a selection of soulful holiday classics to contemporary. A 20 minute set at 11:30am and again at @6:30 pm.
A festive event of soulful holiday music, storytelling, and community celebration.
SIX TRIPLE EIGHT
Dates: January 3–5, 2026
Description: A powerful play honoring the heroic all-Black, all-female 6888th Central Postal Battalion—the only all-female unit deployed overseas during WWII. Presented in recognition of the America 250 celebration.
Available Roles include:
• Major Clarissa Dixon 35-50 – Commanding officer; strong, intelligent, authoritative.
• Major Greer 35-55 – White WAC supervisor; disciplined, initially condescending, later respectful.
• Sadie Oliver 30-45 – Quiet, spiritual, “seer” with emotional depth.
• Sammy Love Bonnet 18-25 –Young, hopeful, romantic; brings energy and innocence.
• Paige Johnson 35-45 – Mature mother figure, compassionate and resilient.
• Cleopatra 25-40 – Performer and morale officer; confident, comedic flair.
• Otis McGhee 20-30 – Warm, charismatic soldier, conflicted by love and duty
Both projects are stipend positions .
